Assignment and new topic

Today we have a tiny bit more to do on the lat assignment before starting work on the next topic.  On paper that you already have in your assignment folders, answer the following questions:

  1. Define relative atomic mass - http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryglossary/a/atomicmassdef.htm
  2. Explain why the relative atomic mass of chlorine is 35.5 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_aqa_pre_2011/chemcalc/chemcalc_bothrev2.shtml
Once you've answered these, submit your assignment back to me so I can re-mark them. Next, answer the questions below that relate to the subject we are going to start on today, Humans and the Environment.
  1. How many humans live on the Earth now? - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515
  2. From the link above, write down the number of births while you were on the site -
  3. List  some impacts that we have on the Environment - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/aqa_pre_2011/evolution/humansrev1.shtml
  4. What environmental problems can low-cost housing cause? - http://www.driversofchange.com/housing/introduction/impact-on-environment.html
  5. List three things that people can do in their homes to reduce environmental impacts - http://www.ecohouseagent.com/

Assignment work

Today we will be continuing on our assignments from last week.  First of all, finish your table for the first pass criteria using the link below.
Once you're done with that, make sure you've saved and printed your table and put it in your assignment pocket.
Secondly, use your assignment sheet to start on the next criteria for task 2.  You will need to use the same tbale link - http://ptable.com/ to name the elements in group 1 (on the left hand side) and group 7 (second from the right).
For the different reactions of sodium, use these links - http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_Chemical_equation_for_sodium_added_to_water , http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Whats_the_balanced_equation_when_sodium_reacts_with_chlorine_to_form_sodium_chloride , http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Word_equation_for_sodium_and_oxygen

This site will help you answer the last question about how reactivity changes as you move down the group - http://www.chemguide.co.uk/inorganic/group1/reacth2o.html

Atoms Assignment

Today we will be completing some more work for our assignment. For p3, you will need to complete the following table -
Element     Symbol     Atomic number     Mass number     Electronic structure

Use this link - http://www.ptable.com/ to find the information you need and enter it into an excel table.  If you finish early, let me know and you can start on the next section.
This link will help you with the mass numbers, or use the 'weight' part of the interactive table. - http://nobel.scas.bcit.ca/chem0010/unit3/3.1.3_numNeutrons.htm

Assignment

Today we will be completing more of the assignment, looking at the merit and distinction criteria.  With your assignment sheets, use the following websites to help you acheive the criteria for task 3 and 4:

Task 3 - Basic information - http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryfaqs/f/aircomposition.htm
Elements, Compounds, mixtures - http://www.chem.purdue.edu/gchelp/atoms/elements.html
Tests for gases - http://www.gcsescience.com/itestoxygen.htm , http://www.gcsescience.com/itestcarbondioxide.htm , http://www.gcsescience.com/itestnitrogen.htm

Task 4 - You can asnwer this on the piece of lined paper we started in class last lesson.

Task 5 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_aqa/atomic/differentsubrev5.shtml

Investigating chemicals

Today we're going to start work on the assignment criteria for the pass grade. You need to make atable explaining the different properties that different chemicals have. Make a table like this in excel:

Chemical name:      State at room temperature:     Reactivity:    Used in:    Number of electrons:

Hydrogen
Sulfuric acid
Copper
Silver
Gold
Potassium
Neon

Use the following websites to help you find information to fill your table in - http://www.chem4kids.com/files/elements/index.html
